Legacy Five has been a long time staple in SGM. With recent group changes, I’d dare say L5 is currently the freshest sounding quartet in the industry. Pure Love is the first release with Lee Black, Bryan Walker, Scott Fowler and Matt Fouch, and pianist, Josh Townsend.
“What A Day” kicks off the new project. Perfect opening track. A progressive banjo riff leads the listener into the courts of Heaven. This upbeat rhythm sets the stage for the remainder of the album. Following is the current single, “What Kind Of Man”. Lyrically, I’ve never heard anything like this before. It showcases all four vocalists, and takes the listener on a biblical journey. I assume this will be a #1 for the fellas and rightfully so.
“That’s What Makes Believers Believe” is one of the only traditional sounding songs on the new project. Beautiful lyric and melody, great concert opener. The title track, “Love, Pure Love” is a catchy song about the eternal compassion of God. Future radio single, I call it.
L5 has recorded 2 Joseph Habedank covers, along with an original written by the stellar soloist. “Begging For Change” And “Middle Man” are both great cuts, with a fresh, yet more traditional sound than the original recordings. “I Believe The Book” co-written by Kenna West, Lee Black and Joseph is my personal favorite of the project, and sure to be a convert favorite. I’d be shocked if this song doesn’t hit the radio waves before the next project.
Additional mention worthy songs are “Not Just Another Day”, “Love Always Finds A Way” and the church closer, “Only Passing Through”. Just incredible arrangements of fresh, yet biblical lyrics
In conclusion, Pure Love is the greatest album released in 2019, thus far, as far as I’m concerned. Although long time L5 fans will notice a significant change in sound, it works and it is fresh. Great job, fellas!
