Bridges

Recently, on a beautiful Fall day, Paula and I were taking a walk through a park near our home. There are several very simply built bridges located throughout the park that I always enjoy walking across, regardless of the season. These bridges remind me of connections, and in some cases divine connections. I’ve crossed them all my life.
Some were in the form of teachers, pastors, music and book publishers and others. People that God used to “connect” my thoughts, songs and ministry to those whom I never dreamed I could reach without them.

These bridges spanned many gulches and ravines, keeping me safe and secure while walking over some troubled waters. Whatever they were and in whatever form they appeared, I’m thankful for them.

I don’t write that much poetry anymore or that many songs for that matter. But on this particular day in the woods, I was moved deeply while crossing a particular bridge. Reflecting on the people and circumstances that connected both of us to what has been our life, I summed up my feeling in this poem. I hope it reflects the feelings of your heart as well.

Bridges

With hands and hearts entwined for years
We’ve scaled our mountain ridges
But nothing tells our story best
As when we’re crossing bridges

Our hopes were linked with dreams unseen
And moments left for planning
As steps were made to cross each gap
And trust each bridge for spanning

I dare not think of what we’d missed
Had there not been connections
‘Tween lost and found and near and far
That came with bridge selections

The path ahead holds distance still
With many prayers and wishes
But I’ll hold dear the lane we’ve walked
Because there were some bridges.
