The Good Shepherd – Bryan Hutson

Why is it that sometimes we as believers feel that God doesn’t care?

Do we think He’s too busy?
Is our problem too big?
Is our problem too small?
In scripture, Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd.
Why would Jesus call Himself a shepherd? And us- Sheep? Well, sheep aren’t the smartest animals. Sheep will often follow another sheep into a dark ravine. Maybe, that’s why He calls His people; Sheep.
John 10:11“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.”
A shepherds responsibility is to care and protect the sheep. That job requires watching over the sheep during dangerous storms, rough terrain and from predators.
Isaiah speaks of Jesus LONG before His physical birth:
Isaiah 40:11 “Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, In His arm He will gather the lambs And carry them in His bosom; He will gently lead the nursing ewes.”
See, a shepherd can TEND his flock, but to really CARE for an individual lamb, he will pick that one lamb up and carry it.
Direct contact.
Jesus wants to have contact with us. He wants to pick us up when we’re hurting. He will not only JUST pick us up, but He carries us. He carries us CLOSE to Himself.
Psalm 100:3 “Know that the LORD Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.”
Psalm 23:1The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.”
Will there be storms in our lives? Yes.
Will we have to walk through and over rough terrain? Yes.
Will we have to face countless, relentless predators that will fight to destroy us? Yes.
But we HAVE a Shepherd. He laid down His life (on the Cross) for us! He will NOT leave us in the rain! He will NOT leave us stranded out on a cliff! He will NOT allow the predators to devour us!
Trust YOUR Shepherd. The Good Shepherd.
Prayer starter: “Father, thank You for being the Good Shepherd and for Your constant, loving protection. When I am afraid, help me to know that YOU are my help! In Jesus name. Amen.”
