George Hamilton IV is best known to many as a country artist who appeared on the Grand Old Opry. He was born in Winston-Salem, NC on July 7, 1937. During his career he made appearances all around the world and could be found on stage with many of the up and coming country artists. He was a also frequent soloist on the Billy Graham crusades. George passed away on September 17, 2014.
There was a TV special that was done about his life and it was during the taping of this program that the songs on this project were recorded. After his death, these songs were remixed and mastered at Crossroads Studio in Arden, NC and thus, this project came about. These tracks may very well be the last recordings of George Hamilton IV.
Several songs on this project are ones that got his career kicked off like “A Rose and A Baby Ruth” that was recorded in 1956 and “Abilene” which went to #1 for him in 1963 on the country charts and stayed there for 4 weeks. Those of you who followed country music back in those days may well remember these two songs. “Singing On The Mountain” is a song that pays tribute to a free gospel music festival that takes place each June at Grandfather Mountain. George was an important part of this festival.
The rest of the selections on this project are hymns that you will recognize and includes “Amazing Grace”, “Draw Me Nearer”, “I Saw The Light”, “I Shall Know Him”, and “Life’s Railway To Heaven”. I bet you knew every one of them and found yourself singing along!
Rounding out this project is “The Wonder Of It All” and another classic “Uncloudy Day”, which is a peppy, hand clapping, toe tapping, foot stomping one. You will definitely be singing along to this one as well.
This is a 3 star recording and one for those that love the country gospel style.
